AFRICAN-AMERICAN MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENTS
AFRICAN-AMERICAN MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENTS
The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government and is bestowed on a member of the armed forces who distinguishes himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity as the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States. Due to the nature of the award, it is commonly presented posthumously.

Of the 3,464 Medals of Honor awarded as of June 2009, 88 have been awarded to 87 different African American recipients. Robert Augustus Sweeney is one of 19 men, and the only African American, to have been awarded 2 Medals of Honor.
